Taiwan (AP) — At least two groups of Chinese officials have canceled
plans to visit Taiwan because of violent protests against a Chinese
envoy when he visited the island last week, a Taiwanese official said
Monday.
The Chinese called off the trips after protesters clashed with police during the bridge-building trip by envoy Chen Yunlin, ruling Nationalist Party spokeswoman Chen Chu-jung said, though she declined to identify which delegations had canceled. (More)

central bank lowered its benchmark interest rate for the fourth time in
two months, adding to a series of cuts in the U.S., Europe and Asia
aimed at preventing a prolonged global recession.
The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) reduced the discount rate on 10-day loans to banks to 2.75 percent from 3 percent effective tomorrow, Governor Perng Fai-nan said at a press conference in Taipei today. TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Tens of thousands of Taiwanese marched in the streets of the capital Saturday to protest the president's efforts to improve relations with rival China. The protest was the first mass rally against President Ma Ying-jeou since his inauguration about 100 days ago. 我坐在電腦前，想著我該為誰而寫信，也想著我要寫信
給誰。 就像一般的台灣母親一樣，我從不讓孩子碰觸政治議題，也要求我的孩
子在學校絕口不提政治。一方面，我希望他們專心學習，不要被社會氛圍分了心、迷了眼；另一方面，也因為在我從小的成長過程中，我被告知，政治是一個危險的
話題，一個可能要命的話題——至少在我從小到大所見所聞，噤口不言是一個明哲保命的選擇。
不過，現在的孩子很聰明，他們在學校，也透過各種方
式學習民主，作父母的是無可迴避的。所以，當女兒回到家問我「總統要選誰」的時候，我實在很難迴避這個問題。 (More)

about two thousand people gathered in front of the Bureau of Monoply in
Taipei to protest the brutal beating on a woman cigarette peddler and
the killing of a bystander by the police on the previous evening. The
Chinese Governor, Chen Yi responded with machine guns, killing several
people on the spot. Uprisings errupted. What ensued were a series of
massacres on the island by the troops sent from China by Chiang
Kai-Shek resulting in the deaths of more than 30,000 Taiwanese people,
followed by an era of white terror (arrests and mysterious disapprances
of countless additional people) by the military police for decades.... (More)

The opposition candidate in Taiwan has easily won the island's presidential election while voters overwhelmingly rejected two referendums on Taiwan joining the United Nations. Opposition candidate Ma Ying-jeou of the Nationalist Party won the presidential race with 58 percent of the vote, compared to 42 percent for Frank Hsieh, of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Sacramento, CA -- July 29, 2007 -- Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today warned consumers not to eat fresh ginger imported from China after the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s residue monitoring program detected the presence of aldicarb sulfoxide in some batches of imported ginger. Aldicarb sulfoxide is a pesticide that is not approved for use on ginger. The product is known to have been distributed to Albertson's stores and Save Mart stores in northern California by Christopher Ranch of Gilroy, California. (more)

美眾院通過
廢止美台官員接觸限制

曹郁芬／華府二十一日報導〕美國眾議院今天傍晚時通過一項由唐克多與夏波眾議員提出的修正案，要求美國政府廢止台灣外交官不得到國務院和白宮
洽公等多項不合時宜的指導原則。唐克多和夏波今天在眾議院討論國務院授權法案時提出這項修正案，傍晚即獲得眾院口頭無異議通過。唐克多和夏波去年也曾提出相同的修正案並獲眾院通過，但因 行政部門強烈反對並積極動員，最後未在參院通過而功虧一簣。
唐克多的助理認為，參議院今年多了包括布朗在內的數位對台灣友好參議員，這項修正案在參院通過機率增加，但行政部門反對力量仍然很大。參院最快也要到七月 才會討論國務院授權法案。
美台斷交後，曾自我設限定下許多政策指導原則，以限制美台官員間的「官方接觸」，例如台灣官員不得到國務院和白宮等地洽公，許多會議必須在私人俱樂部或餐 館舉行。台灣舉辦的國慶酒會及在雙橡園舉辦的活動，美官員不得出席。
唐克多的提案要求全面廢止這些不合理限制。唐克多在新聞稿中表示，這些自我設限的指導原則在與民主友人和盟友的關係中是不存在的，國務院數十年來被綑綁在 一個維持台海現狀的政策裡，台灣早已變成一個活躍的民主國家，中國卻在對岸進行可觀的飛彈部署，「現狀早已改變」，但美國的骨董政策還不變。希望「賓州大 道另一端（指白宮）」能清楚聽到眾院的訊息。

Book Review. "Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy" by Bruce Herschensohn
Taiwan occupies a unique place in the world, a state that lacks diplomatic recognition from most countries. This leaves the United States to handle a delicate balancing act: the need to continue dealing with Taiwan without upsetting China. Taipei-based translator and writer Matthew Greenwich reviews a new book that tackles the issue. "Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy" by Bruce Herschensohn helps to fill the void of intellectual discourse about Taiwan. In this volume, which weighs in light at around 200 pages, the author takes readers on a whirlwind tour of the history of the Taiwan-China-United States triangular relationship since the Chinese Civil War.
