Keating Seminar
on Taiwan -
12/22/05 (Pictures) TAA-DFW and NATEA-Dallas co-sponsored a complimentary seminar, featuring Prof. Jerome F. Keating. Prof. Keating is a former resident of Dallas, who currently works and lives in Taiwan. He has an unique perspective on Taiwan's democracy and shared his findings via this seminar titled, "A Report of Taiwan's Political Developments". ![]() TAA-DFW and Epoch Times (Da Chi Yuan Times) co-sponsored a special presentation by Baylor-Houston professor, Dr. Li-Li Feng, on Bird Flu and what you should do to prepare for it. (Additional information on Bird Flu can also be found in an article by TAA-DFW member and pharmacist, Neil Juan.) TAA-DFW Health Seminar - 11/27/05 (Press Release [Chinese version], Pictures) The annual health seminar focused on eye and dental care. Optometrist, Dr. Alice Hsu, discussed several common eye ailments, their symptoms and methods of treatment. Dentist, Dr. Daniel Liu, talked about periodontal diseases, dental implants and provided many helpful tips on maintaining healthy teeth. ![]() The mid-autumn festival celebration attracted over 150 attendees, including students from UTA, UNT and UD. Traditional Taiwanese dinner was served along with moon cake. The evening program included the best of Taiwan Night from the summer conference, an original skit by UTA-TSA students, line dance, ballroom dance and karaoke. TAA-DFW also used the opportunity to do fundraising for Katrina hurricane victims. Nearly $4,000 was collected toward Katrina Relief Fund. Mr. Yao Chia-Wen, president of Taiwan's Examination Yuan held a townhall meeting at the Radisson Hotel in Richardson. Mr. Yao spoke about the urgency for a name change, so Taiwan would not be confused with China for political and economic reasons. Q&A followed Mr. Yao's presentation. (1) "Financial Planning for People Over 50". Long-timeTAA member, Jack Hwang, discussed IRA, social security benefits, Medicare, annuity, and answered questions about these and other retirement related financial planning needs. (2) "Protecting Your Assets with a Living Trust" was the topic presented by attorney Stuart Kalb, who specializes in setting up customized living trusts. Q&A followed his presentation. (Flyer and Speaker Profile) OCAC Chairman, Dr. Chang Fu Mei, paid a visit to Dallas in late July. At the dinner speech on 7/28/05, Dr. Chang solicited help from area Taiwanese Americans to gain world recognition for Taiwan. She was warmly greeted by the local leaders and received strong support from TAA-DFW. Over 300 people converged on the DFW Airport Marriott South in Ft. Worth for the annual TAA south region conference with concurent NATEA workshop and TC student leadership conference. In additon to people from Texas and Louisiana, this year drew attendees from Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Los Angeles and Taiwan. This year's theme was "New Challenges Facing Indigenous and Overseas Taiwanese". Keynote speaker, Mr. Ning Tze-Chu, special guest speaker, Mr. Cao Chang Qing and Taiwan Night entertainment highlighted the 3-day event. ![]() About 25 early risers either carpooled or drove by themselves to Sadler, about 1.5 hours north of Dallas, to pick blueberries at the Bailey's Berry Patch (Map). For many, it was the first time. Everyone enjoyed the experience. ![]() This year's picnic was held again at the Cimarron Park Recreation Center in Irving. Over 100 attendees, including several new members and students from UTA, took time from their busy schedules to share the traditional foods (bamboo leaf wrapped rice ball, tea flavored egg, rice noodle and grass jelly) and a few laughters. Activities at the picnic included "She Said/He Said" game for couples, singing Taiwanese songs and watermelon seed spitting contest and lots of socializing. Local donations to the Tsuanmi Relief Fund were pooled with others at TAA-USA and sent to the American Refugee Committee, who responded with an appreciation letter and a certificate. Several TAA-DFW members contributed. Texas 4000 for Cancer - 5/21/05 (Pictures) TAA-DFW members opened their wallets and donated $600 to sponsor UT Austin biker, Stephen Green, one of the 50 bikers who is riding his bike from Austin to Alaska to raise money for cancer research. The bikers began their marathon journey on 6/4/05. TAA-Austin was there to send them off. ![]() (1) "Free Stuff for Your Computer" - TAA board member and webmaster, Frank Yeh, explained open source software and provided links to many free software. (2) "Over-the-Counter Medications" - TAA board member and pharmacist, Jiin Chen discussed the Do's and Don'ts of over-the-counter medications for use from head to toe. TAA-DFW Seminar Featuring Dr. Ih Foo Lin - 5/7/05 (Press Release, Story, Pictures) "The Makeup of Taiwanese Character" was the focus of Dr. Ih Foo Lin's presentation. Dr. Lin is a practicing psychiatrist from Ohio. He brought an unique perspective on the Taiwanese characteristics and related his observations to the Stockholm Syndrome. ![]() Plano Sister Cities Inc., Taiwanese American Heritage Foundation and TAA-DFW co-sponsored a 30-minute "Taiwan Period" at Plano's Bethany Elementary School. Third grade students learned about Taiwan through a combination of formal presentations, TV video and brochures. Each student was given a bookmark stamped with the "Taiwan Touch Your Heart" logo and his/her name in calligraphy. Peace Rally - 3/6/05 (Background, Story, Pictures) Over 100 people from local Taiwanese American communities gathered in front of the Kennedy Memorial (downtown Dallas) on Sunday, 3/6/05, to protest China's planned "anti-secession" law. The rally brought together a cross section of people including long-time residents and their families, students from area universities and a few out-of-town visitors. Several Chinese language news reporters were on hand to cover the event. Local TV station, Channel 8, reported the story at its 5:30 broadcast. Remembering 2-28 Events - 2/26/05-2/27/05 (Story, Pictures) 2/26/05: Memorial service by UTA-TSA students, 228 baskets tossing relay. 2/27/05: FAHR, FAPA and TAA-DFW's memorial service, with special guest speaker, "The Rogue Professor", Lin Jyan-Lung ![]() 2005 Lunar New Year Party - 2/5/05 (Press Release, Program, Story, Pictures1, Pictures2) TAA-DFW celebrated the 2005 Lunar New Year on Saturday, 2/5/05 at the Maxim's Restaurant. The evening event included a keynote speech by Chen Ming-Cheng, several entertainment programs by TAA members, TWA, TaiHsin and UTA students. The party had about 230 attendees. Many prizes were raffled off, including two round trip tickets from Eva Air and China Airlines. Five new board members were elected to replace five retiring board members. (Back to Top) |
